Why did Romeo and Juliet end as a tragedy? Both characters faced many hardships within their relationship. They faced problems with the expectations of society and the feud standing in the way of their love. Juliet faced more problems with her parents than Romeo did. Lord and Lady Capulet wanted her to marry Paris, and Romeo didn’t have that problem. There were many different things that stood in the way of their love. Since their families hated each other, Romeo and Juliet couldn’t tell their parents they were together because it would create more drama. Because of this, Juliet had to fake her own death just to be with Romeo. Juliet’s “death” broke Romeo which caused him to kill himself, therefore the initial start of their deaths was the feud. After Romeo and Juliet are discovered to be dead by Paris and their families, Paris blames the feuding families for their deaths. “Where be these enemies?--Capulet, Montague, see what a scourge is laid upon your hate, that heaven finds means to kill your joys with love, and I, for winking at your discords too, have lost a brace of kinsmen. All are punished,” (V,iii,301-305) Paris is saying that their feud is to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths and that they are all punished for what they have done. Although Romeo and Juliet knew after they met that they were from opposite families, they continued their relationship. Some people may say it was their fault and childish for them to love each other. Therefore making their deaths completely their fault. In an article by Stanton Peele Ph.D., he says, “These are two depressed people unable to cope with stress and obstacles in life! Mercutio’s murder was driven by hate; Tybalt just wanted to pick a fight with anybody from the Montague family. Romeo tried to stop them and wanted to avoid getting involved, but he failed. Romeo hated Tybalt for killing his best friend, so he killed Tybalt. After everyone found out about Mercutio, Romeo, and Tybalt, Romeo was banished. The banishment was the first step to all of the horrible things that happened in the end. The first step was driven by hate from the feud. It destroyed their love. After Romeo killed Tybalt, he talks about how this may have destroyed their love. “Spakest thou of Juliet? How is it with her? Doth she not think me an old murderer, now I have stained the childhood of our joy with blood removed but little of her own? Where is she? And how doth she? And what says my concealed lady to our cancelled love?”(III,iii,93-98) Romeo is saying that their love is destroyed because of his hateful act. He killed her cousin, and he knows that she will be devastated and she probably won’t ever want to see him
