Romeo And Juliet Foreshadowing Analysis

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet uses the literary device of foreshadowing to advance the tragic story of two teenage lovers. “Foreshadowing is the use in a literary work of clues that suggest events that have yet to occur” (Textbook R15). Shakespeare uses many examples of foreshadowing that have to do with the climax of the play. The climax is the death of both Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare expresses foreshadowing in a very eerie mood. This causes the reader to experience a sense of darkness every time the characters in the play foreshadow the death of the two lovers. In Act 1 Romeo foreshadows his death when he says, “ROMEO: With this night’s revels and expire term/ Of a despised life, closed in my breast, / By some vile forfeit of untimely death” (1.5.109-112). What Romeo is trying to express in this quote is that he feels the feast of the Capulets, that he is attending, will shorten his life. This foreshadows meeting Juliet at the feast, but it also foreshadows his death. It foreshadows his death because like he said in the quote, he begins to feel an eerie feeling. These examples of foreshadowing direct the plot towards the climax of the play when Romeo and Juliet die for each other out of love. The dark and eerie feeling of each one of these quotes allow the reader to feel an emotion of evil that is death. Also all of these quotes foreshadow their death to be a catastrophe, because in reality Juliet was only sleeping when Romeo kills himself. Juliet then decides to stab herself with a blade when she sees Romeo dead. The reader would find the death of Romeo and Juliet ironic, because there were people that warned them that something like this would happen.
