Many people can easily agree that Romeo and Juliet is one the most tragic plays ever. Romeo and Juliet is a romantic, and tragic, play by William Shakespeare. The story is about two young lovers, Romeo and Juliet, who cannot be together because of a family feud, but still do. There are many characters who contrast each other, also known as foils, such as Romeo and Mercutio, Tybalt and Benvolio, and lastly Juliet and the Nurse. First, Remo and Mercutio are a pair who easily contrast each other. Romeo is often sad, while Mercutio is happy. In the beginning, Romeo was in love with someone else who did not love him back. Romeo was devastated, even at the ball him and his friends were invited to. Romeo wanted “…a torch. I am not for this ambling. Being but heavy, I will bear the light,” (1.4.12-13). After Romeo was banished, Juliet rushed towards the Friar to seek help. While in his cell, she got frustrated and “… long[ed] to die. If what thou speak’st speak of remedy” (4.1.67-68). Juliet is being irrational and ignorant by saying this. The Friar earlier told her to calm down, but she refused, also making her childish. When Romeo and Juliet had first met and wanted to get married, it was the nurse that helped Juliet to find “…another way, to fetch a ladder, by which your love must climb” (2.5.71-73). Even though to the Nurse does not like Romeo very much she stills agrees to get the ladder, proving she is supportive and kind to Juliet. When Romeo is banished, the Nurse makes a comment about it. Juliet got furious and the Nurse tried to explain it is not a reason for her to stop living. The Nurse was just trying to help Juliet understand what is best for her.
