The Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet, is one of the worlds most known tragedies. Rather than the use of a bright setting, director Franco Zeffirelli uses techniques using music to support their love in the scene, while another director by the name of Baz Luhrmann primarily uses setting rather than the film’s music. Both cinematic versions of the same play are different from each other in the way they are directed. Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann use cinematic techniques of setting and music differently to show the theme of love.

In Franco Zeffirelli’s version of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet is speaking to herself about Romeo during the beginning of this scene. During this, there is soft music playing quietly. Later in the scene, when Romeo and Juliet confess their love for each other, an instrumental rendition of the song that was playing at the party, “What is a Youth,” when they met began to play. This musical element is used to give the viewers a callback to the scene at the beginning of the film when Romeo and Juliet first met, which is when Romeo and Juliet fell in love. In this film, the music is used to show that Romeo and Juliet are in love. Similarly to Zeffirelli’s movie, Baz Luhrmann’s film uses music from their version of the party scene to convey the love between the couple. In the beginning of the scene, however, Luhrmann does not use soft music when Juliet is speaking about her feelings for Romeo. Instead, the music is held off until they confess their love. Once again, it is the music that was playing at Montague's party when the two met. Just like Franco Zeffirelli’s version of Romeo and Juliet, Baz Luhrmann uses the film’s musical composition to support how Romeo and Juliet feel about each other. The softness in this version shows that the two characters are calm and comfortable with each other. This helps to support the theme that two youths can find love. Both films use different musical elements to support the love between Romeo and
