Romeo and Juliet Essay Throughout Shakespeare’s drama “Romeo and Juliet,” there is a constant battle of understanding whether fate or free will is the cause of the tragedy. There are examples of free will pushing toward the final result, but fate outshines them. Fate is at work during the play because many of the main events happen because of fate, there are direct references of fate having control of the character’s paths, and Romeo and Juliet are destined for tragedy. In the drama, many of the main events are a result of fate. Once Benvolio gives Romeo the clearance to go out, Romeo goes to Juliet’s balcony. After they start talking, Juliet says, “"And the place death, considering who thou art, if any of my kinsmen find thee here" (II.ii. 64-65). By fate, Romeo was

Before Romeo enters the party where he meets Juliet, he refers to fate having controls of his actions. He says, “But he that hath steerage of my course direct my sail” (I.iv.112-113). Romeo makes it known that he does not know why he is choosing to do what he is doing. If it was not for fate, Romeo would have most likely not have entered the party and met Juliet. Later on, Balthasar feels that he needs to break news to Romeo of Juliet’s death. He says, " O, pardon me for bringing these ill news” (IV.i.22). While being controlled by fate, Balthasar breaks the news to Romeo before Friar John can get to him. If this had not happened, Romeo would not have gone to the tomb to kill himself. After Romeo and Juliet are both dead, Montague reflects on his and Capulets’ past actions. He says,"What further woe conspires against mine age” (V.iii.211). In the midst of the sudden deaths, Montague realizes that fate has played a part in Romeo and Juliet's deaths. He takes action, and makes amends with the Capulet family.
