Fate plays a small yet important role in the tragedy because without fate, Romeo and Juliet would not have met and the story would not have happened. Prior to attending the Capulets’ dinner, Romeo knew something bad was about to occur. “Fear too early, for my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars shall bitterly begin his fearful date with this night’s revels, and expire the term of a despised life closed in my breast by some vile forfeit of untimely death” (I.iv.107-112). Fate indicates to Romeo that something bad is about to begin and will only end with his death yet he still takes a chance by attending the party. Fate foreshadows many things, but it keeps telling us that the lovers may end up dead together. ” O God, I have an ill-divining soul. Me thinks I see thee now, thou art so low as one dead in the bottom of a tomb. Either my eyesight fails, or thou look’st pale” (III.v.53-56). Fate gave Juliet a vision in which one of the lovers die which is how the lovers end up.

Juliet states “My only love sprung from my only hate” (I.v.138). This quote is from when Juliet first finds out who the man she met at the dinner is, the son of the rival family. They had only met and spoken once, but she already referred to him as her love even after knowing who he is. Her inexperience with love and life made her think he is the right one for her and that’s how she is towards him until she dies. After knowing Romeo for hardly a few days, Juliet agrees to marry the man from the opposing family. “If that thy bent of love be honorable, thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow” (II.ii.143-144). Since Juliet does not have much experience with love, she believes Romeo is the man for her and agrees to wed the stranger without even knowing him
