Romeo and Juliet will never age. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is a classic that has stood the test of time because many of the themes are encountered by teens today. Themes seen in the play that are relevant in our lives today are; feeling pressured by family, teen rebellion and the forcefulness of love.
The first situation in Romeo and Juliet that teens encounter today is feeling pressure by their families. Although family is the most important thing in some people’s lives, it is also the people who can drive you crazy. For example, some parents today are still against their children having a relationship with certain races and individuals. Although race was not a problem with the Capulets and the Montagues, the prejudice of race and religion can be replaced by the hate these two families had for each other, creating tension in the story. In this way, parents might be too harsh when it comes to their children dating. Some families try to control who their child is allowed to have a relationship with. When strong emotions occur, teens generally forget logic and do things that they wouldn’t normally do. How many problems have occurred in oak bay and other high schools because teens were thinking on emotion. In Romeo and Juliet this was an issue as seen in the fight of Mercutio and Tybalt. Although they weren’t fighting out of love for each other, they were fighting due to others around them that they had strong feeling for. However, fights are not the only things; when teenagers make decisions based on emotion, it can result in large consequences, things such as bullying or harming others or themselves without thinking of the repercussions.
