When Juliet gave Robert that box: “Right on the box it says: `Wax matches—for all kinds of weather!’ And the candles had …show more content…
The brutality and pride that those boys took from Robert cannot even be measured. It was as if they ripped away any self he had left. They had brutalised him, stealing away all his decency. There is not even the right word to explain how horrible the incidence was for him. And may I ask what he did to deserve it? What would any human being have done to be allowed to be so violated in that fashion? What horrible thing had he done? Nothing. The same is true for the Jews in World War Two. What did they ever do to be beaten and shot to death? Or the women being raped without any regrets from the Germans? Who would ask for that brutality? It was only because they were Jewish. Now, how horrendous is that? The thought of how people could be so cruel to one another is outstanding. I cannot comprehend why people commit atrocities of that nature to one another. Robert indicts humanity and the act of war, stating that if any animal had done anything like what these soldiers were perpetrating, the animal would be put down. Instead, he shoots Captain Leather, someone Robert sees as a human embodiment of ignorance and arrogance. He holds Captain Leather responsible for not letting him evacuate the animals earlier. As a result, they are now dead. This is a criminal action in Robert's opinion, a view of what is most important to
