Film Adaptations: Romeo and Juliet (1968) and West Side Story (1961)

Many films have been created based on novels and play scripts. Plays have transitioned from performances on stage to the big cinema screens. Since many legendary play scripts were created before our century, American film directors had to ask themselves, “How can an older piece of work interest the audience of today?”. Directors found it challenging to express an original piece of work while attempting to interest the minds of today. The characters in many older works lived in a different time and in a different country. Therefore, American film directors had to adapt the details of older works in order to make it relevant to the life of today’s general American population.

However, the film West Side Story brings forth the shameful American culture of rape and shows the issue with one scene. In America, it is shameful that most “...female victims of completed rape experienced their first rape before the age of 25 (Black).” It is more shocking that “one in five women” are victims of “...completed rape” at least once in their lifetime (Black). In West Side Story, the scene of Anita walking into the bar without the company of a man raises the eyes of the Jets who are all gathered at the same bar. The Jets see Anita vulnerable and sexually harass her as they pass her around within the gang. The gang of animals are seen attempting to undress Anita as she pleads for them to stop. The entire gang of Jets somehow end up on top of Anita until a man walks into the scene and stops the Jets from continuing to torment Anita. This scene implies that the Jets would have attempted to complete a gang rape if they would not have been interrupted. This specific disturbing scene brings forward the issue of rape within the American culture. Women being raped in America is found common and the judicial system does not fight to the extent of the law to put every criminal involved in the crime behind bars. While the film does bring forward the issue of rape in the American culture, the film does fail to show Anita do anything about the incident. Anita does not tell anyone about her encounter with the Jets. Anita is choosing to cover-up the incident when she chooses to not speak up for herself. Others may argue that not speaking of a violent sexual encounter basically says that the incident never occurred. Therefore, Anita’s decision to stay silent fits the argument others may make. However, unwanted sexual encounters still happened

Often when adapting from a play into a movie, screenwriters choose to take a different approach to the narrative configuration of the work. Due to this, certain elements of the film and theater adaptations may present differentiations in meanings or themes. An example can be seen between the screen and stage versions of Six Degrees of Separation [1993]. Both are inspired by the true story of David Hampton, a young con artist who was able to convince elite Upper East Siders to open their homes to him in the 1980’s, claiming to be a college friend of their children and the son of famous black director, Sidney Poitier. The difference, however, is that the play is presented as a story that the characters tell the audience through their action and dialogue, while the movie is written in such a way that the characters tell their stories to others characters within the film.…

In fact, Alex felt that “[reporting her rape to her RA and the college] was too overwhelming to contemplate” (219). It would have meant that what had happened to her that night and the rest of her freshman year activities would have been discussed in great detail across the entire college, ruining her reputation and even opening a chance of her parents discovering what she had been up to. It was too embarrassing for her and if other girls “had the same experience, many of them had probably remained silent about it, too” (219). These are the effects of rape culture. The fact that many other women who have or will read “Older Sister” would have or have done the same thing is rape…

n the age of technology, there are now many ways of viewing different literature, including movies. Movies and plays share common similarities: they are made to be watched by an audience, actors take on the roles of the characters, properties are added to make the story more realistic, and the list goes on. When I was told that my play, The Importance of Being Earnest, was becoming a movie, I had mixed feelings. I was extremely satisfied that my work was successful enough to become a movie, yet many movie adaptions are often subpar. After watching the movie, I have made my decision.…

Women are assaulted daily; in fact one in every five women experience sexual assault. Rape shouldn’t be a tool for entertainment, women deserve an opportunity to face their daemons rather than be forgotten within the plot line. Jada Yuan structures her piece with her idea, “[Women] deserve yo have their traumas acknowledged. They deserve their stories to be told ” (Page 4). This is an obvious representation of how our society functions; ask women to raise their hands if they have ever been sexually assaulted and you will see a lack of hands, begin talking about rape and sharing stories…
