Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet embraces the physical violence, rivalry, death of lovers and reconciliation, thus constructing a movie with the same emotional response intended by the original play. Zeffirelli’s interpretation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet greatly reflects the major changes during the era. The 1960’s was a time of civil unrest, youth rebellion of moral and civil rights and a period in history where authority was questioned.…

“Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?” These are words spoken by Juliet in both versions of the movie Romeo and Juliet produced by Franco Zeffirilli in 1968 and Baz Luhrmann in 1996. Both the masquerade ball and the balcony scenes portray the characters of Romeo and Juliet very differently as well as the overall production of the adapted versions of the plays. The masquerade ball takes place in the Capulet household, and that is about as far as the similarities go between the films.…

These two movies are similar and different in many ways and the directors of each play tried to put their spin on this classic play. There are many scenes which are different and similar but one is Act 5 Scene 3. One difference is that when Romeo came to find Juliet she was in a church while in the newer movie but in the older movie she was in the Capulet’s vault. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was published in 1957 in Elizabethan England. Even though the play was set in Verona, Italy, many situations were similar to those in England. In the play, two families, the Capulets and the Montagues, are sworn enemies, and fight throughout the play. Romeo Montague, however, ignores the feud for one night to find a girl, Rosaline, at a Capulet party. Once there, he falls in love with Juliet Capulet, the daughter of his enemy, from behind a mask.…

The play takes place in Verona, Italy in the 1500’s while the movie takes place in Verona beach California in the 1990’s. One of the things that makes it more modern is the use of guns instead of swords. It would have been weird for the characters walking down the streets with swords in the modern time of the movie, so I believe this detail fits well. Another difference is that the party at the Capulet house was more of a dress up party rather than the masquerade ball they have in the play. I think that some of these differences make both movie and play look like a joke and not a serious romance like Shakespeare most likely intended it to be.…

In Conclusion, I think that Romeo is a young, inexperienced and impatient but loyal and brave boy. I think that his naivety plays a huge rule in this because love was taken as an extravagant feeling to have when it was not truly happy as the lovers can experience heartbreak and many other obstacles. It seems as if Romeo only more cautious and deliberate, his devastating ending could have been prevented (even though we have not finished the book yet). Amongst friends especially Mercutio, Romeo shows signs of his social and quick witted persona, even with his fond of verbal jousting that is mainly about sex. Lastly, Romeo is like every other male in the world who only unveils their true self to the people who they trust or who understand them.…
