I believe that the Zeffirelli version does a better job of presenting the original Shakespeare play. While lines were slightly changed, and certain scenes were deleted, or added, this version is a more classic, and traditional retelling of Romeo and Juliet. One reason why this version is better, is because of the production, and the ways in which the scenes were depicted. In the modern version, the scenes were exaggerated to an extent where they became too cheesy, and extreme. While it followed the plot more accurately, it was poorly made. The sets, costumes, and script used in the Zeffirelli version all contribute to the film to accurately depict Shakespeare's play.
