The original Shakespeare text shows Romeo and Juliet meeting at a Capulet dinner feast. Romeo, Benvolio and Mercutio, without invites, sneak into the ‘masquerade’. This is where Romeo first catches sight of Juliet. Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, then recognises the Montague. He wants to initiate a fight, however Capulet stops him. By then, Romeo and Juliet start talking, soon kissing, however are interrupted by Juliet’s nurse. Romeo asks the nurse who Juliet is, soon to discover that she is a Capulet, and their love will be forbidden. As the night draws to a close, the Nurse tells Juliet that Romeo is a Montague.

The quality of Gnomeo and Juliet is quite a lot better than West Side Story, but we see a big difference in the years that they were produced (1962 – 2011). During the almost 50 years in between these two adaptations being created, the materials and equipment would have progressed, and allowed the directors to make these changes. For new movies to stay interesting and stand out, Directors would have to continually push boundaries. As time progresses, societies views and opinions would also change. As Gnomeo and Juliet is aimed at a much younger audience, we see key parts of the movie being erased. However, in West Side Story, the movie shows all parts, such as the two main characters kissing, and the two main characters dying, which Gnomeo and Juliet doesn’t. West Side story also has a strong influence by the context that is created in, for example where we see strong historical and cultural contexts.
