The quality of Gnomeo and Juliet is quite a lot better than West Side Story, but we see a big difference in the years that they were produced (1962 – 2011). During the almost 50 years in between these two adaptations being created, the materials and equipment would have progressed, and allowed the directors to make these changes. For new movies to stay interesting and stand out, Directors would have to continually push boundaries. As time progresses, societies views and opinions would also change. For example, a movie based on Romeo and Juliet, portrayed by Gnomes, may have had a different reaction in the 1960s then they did in the …show more content…
As Gnomeo and Juliet is aimed at a much younger audience, we see key parts of the movie being erased. However, in West Side Story, the movie shows all parts, such as the two main characters kissing, and the two main characters dying, which Gnomeo and Juliet doesn’t. West Side story also has a strong influence by the context that is created in, for example where we see strong historical and cultural contexts. As the movie is largely impacted by what was happening in the 1950s, at various stages the movie becomes extremely focused on the context, and it leads to changes in the

Tattoos” flawlessly recognizes another major difference between both films saying that Romeo and Juliet shows the resolution of the two families unlike Romeo + Juliet where it is not even revealed. It is important to note that Jennifer L. Martin made an explanation in her article “Tights vs. Tattoos” confirming, “Luhrmann’s version ends with a television newscaster reading the Prince’s last six line, followed by the static of a TV screen. We do not see the overt resolution of the two families, as is made clear in Zeffirelli’s version” (Martin 6). The getting together of the families is very important because it shows that the deaths of Romeo and Juliet did not go to vain. If both families got nothing out of it, then what was the use of having the play take place?…

Amongst my peers, it seems Romeo and Juliet exists in a fantasy land that never happened; the time period very well has happened, but it has passed and no one living has seen it, so it does not feel quite as real as the setting of Romeo + Juliet. Even so, the juxtaposition of the tale with this new setting suspends it even farther into a realm of disbelief. It’s assisted by fireworks, fairy lights, and slow motion shots, but in modernity, this story seems even less real because the audience has seen first-hand that this is not how life happens now—more often than not, it does not progress so easily, so erratically, or so dramatically. To be concise: for all a modern audience knows, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet could be an accurate depiction of life and love in 15th century Italy; it is definitely fantasy when set in modern day because they can observe their own lives and recognize the…

The first way Romeo and Juliet influenced West Side Story was by the characters. The two main characters were Romeo and Juliet in one story, a boy and a girl who fell in love at first sight. From the other, it was Tony and Maria who also fell in love at first sight. Tony was like Romeo, while Maria was like Juliet. From both stories they were two people from different sides as well.…

In Shakespear’s and Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet, there are many similarities, but there are also many different substantial differences that can change the impression the viewer may get if they only watch the movie without reading the play. To begin, there are many similarities between Zeffirelli 's and Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet. One similarity is that Romeo is very moody; in the beginning of the movie, Romeo can be seen frequently slumped over and talking in a very downcast manner. Similarly, in the play, Romeo is found by Benvolio laying moping around saying, “Should without eyes see pathways to his will!” (I.i.162).…

Jerome Robbins' suggested the idea of developing a musical based off of the story of Romeo and Juliet to Leonard Bernstein in January of 1949 (originally proposed title: East Side Story, set in the less privileged areas of New York at the concurrence of Easter-Passover celebrations). In August of 1955, a gathering with Arthur Laurents took place where another idea emerged -- two teen-age mobs as the conflicting groups, one of them newly-arrived Puerto Ricans, the other self-styled "Americans." In November, 1955 Stephen Sondheim joined the project as lyricist. A year and a half later, rehearsals began for the Broadway premiere of West Side Story. West Side Story (as it is now known) transforms the famous work of Shakespeare called…

The musical is based off of Shakespeare’s play called Romeo and Juliet, with the idea of modernizing the plot to relate to New York in the 20th century (Hoffman 84). The musical was originally set to be called East Side Story; a “religion-oriented” (Hoffman 85) feud between two parties, however, a transformation occurred “between Jerry Robbins’s original idea in 1949 and the Broadway premier in 1957 [sic]” (Hoffmann 85). The initial theme of East Side Story was of a conflict between the Jewish Capulets and and the Italian Catholic Romeo.…
