The Importance Of Water In Romeo And Juliet '

The color blue is often used in bedrooms for calming effect and the color can slow metabolism which might be why Baz Luhrmann uses it along with water in Romeo + Juliet. It provides a calming effect until sudden savagery erupts. It can be seen virtually all the time and sometimes it is placed on purpose like in the death scenes of Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, and Tybalt and sometimes just as background like when Lord Montague and Lord Capulet meet Captain Prince in his office and there is a blue sign hanging up. Water is another element used in fight scenes and love scenes. Water also has a natural calming effect and is often used as white noise to block out distractions and mentally isolate oneself. The reason for the frequent use of water and …show more content…
Juliet’s room is also cladded in blue as the bed cover, rug, curtains, chair, and various dolls are blue. Before the party Romeo has a vision of himself walking down an isle with blue crosses on either side and says, “by some vile forfeit of untimely death” which foreshadows him seeing Juliet under the influence of the sleep potion and drinking the vile of poison. During the party, we also see Romeo’s face in water much like the view of Juliet earlier with is eyes open, but it turns out to be from a low angle view because it is in the bottom of a sink. This scene links his suicide with Juliet’s because it shows how similarly they will die. Later at the party the first time Romeo and Juliet see one another, it is through a blue aquarium which foreshadows the deaths by water and something …show more content…
After Romeo leaves the Capulet’s party he visits friar Lawrence and he is making a poisonous concoction that is blue which prefigures two things. One is that it implies the friar being involved in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet and the second reason being that it shows how a potion the friar makes will lead to their deaths. Right after his meeting with the friar Romeo shows up to the beach meeting Benvolio and Mercutio wearing a predominantly blue shirt which prefigures how Romeo affects the fight between Tybalt and Mercutio leading to Mercutio dying of his injuries from when Romeo stepped in. Mercutio dies on the beach next to the ocean which adumbrates that more violence is to come in the presence of water or the color blue. Then it shows a long shot of Romeo running to his car which is by the blue wall of the stage, which presages that something else will happen which arises when Romeo chases Tybalt and kills him with his own gun. As Romeo shoots Tybalt, the camera switches to an extreme close up of Romeo and Tybalt falls into the water behind him. After Romeo drops the gun the camera changes to show a statue illuminated in a blue light which portends that even more

In Conclusion, I think that Romeo is a young, inexperienced and impatient but loyal and brave boy. I think that his naivety plays a huge rule in this because love was taken as an extravagant feeling to have when it was not truly happy as the lovers can experience heartbreak and many other obstacles. It seems as if Romeo only more cautious and deliberate, his devastating ending could have been prevented (even though we have not finished the book yet). Amongst friends especially Mercutio, Romeo shows signs of his social and quick witted persona, even with his fond of verbal jousting that is mainly about sex. Lastly, Romeo is like every other male in the world who only unveils their true self to the people who they trust or who understand them.…

“Tragedy is an imitation of an action that is complete and whole… (Aristotle 31)”. This theory conveyed by Aristotle in his renowned work Poetics expresses the idea that a successful tragedy consists of specific principles that reoccur in classic literature. The theory emphasizes that a tragedy represents reality and universal truths rather than historical particulars. This is achieved by creating a tightly-woven cause and effect chain or “unity of action” that centers around the plot rather than the personalities of the characters. Also, the plot of the tragedy should have complex, specific, and coherent turning points, that are a part of the “unity of action”.…

Although the idea of reading Romeo and Juliet in English class may make students groan and imagine the worst, there are many benefits as to why reading such a difficult and popular type of literature exist. In my opinion, I think Romeo and Juliet should be included in a school’s curriculum because of how helpful it could be to those students. There are many benefits, including that students will have a better understanding of how to step out of their comfort zone and will allow students to understand more complex pieces of literature in life. Also, students will learn new vocabulary and learn about the 15th century society and customs.…
