The play Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story about a couple that is meant to be, but their families are enemies. Personal choices and fate both impact the characters in many ways. It was Romeo’s personal choice to go to the Capulet party. “I’ll go along, no such sight to be shown, I but to rejoice in splendor of mine own” (193). If Romeo didn’t decide to go to the party, then he would've never met Juliet and he would of never fell in love with her. “I pray can you read…” (192). If the servant didn’t ask Romeo if he knew how to read, then Romeo wouldn’t have known about the party. Friar Laurence’s personal choice was wanting to marry Romeo and Juliet. “Come, come with me, and we will make short work; For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone till Holy Church incorporate two in one” (226). He is saying that the marriage will work because he is agreeing to marry them. “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be; I for this alliance may so happy prove I to turn …show more content…

Juliet is being forced to marry a man she doesn’t love. “And I will do it without fear or doubt,/ to live an unstained life to my sweet life” (255). She is willing to drink the potion if it will result in her marrying Paris. If Juliet didn’t agree to drinking the potion, then she would of had to marry Paris. In conclusion, personal choices and fate both impact Romeo and Juliet. If Romeo didn’t decide on going to the Capulet party, Friar Lawrence agreeing to marry Romeo and Juliet, and Juliet agreeing to drink the potion didn’t happen then everything would be different. Fate plays a small yet important role in the tragedy because without fate, Romeo and Juliet would not have met and the story would not have happened. Prior to attending the Capulets’ dinner, Romeo knew something bad was about to occur. “Fear too early, for my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars shall bitterly begin his fearful date with this night’s revels, and expire the term of a despised life closed in my breast by some vile forfeit of untimely death” (I.iv.107-112). Fate indicates to Romeo that something bad is about to begin and will only end with his death yet he still takes a chance by attending the party. Fate foreshadows many things, but it keeps telling us that the lovers may end up dead together.…

Ironically it is Romeo that is the cause for his life’s outcome, not fate as he assumes. Romeo’s “automatic response” to the way he sees his life slowly despairing is that it is predetermined and that he may as well follow along because he cannot stop it. Romeo early on has the opportunity to stop the downward spiral that his life is in, but he only solidifies his fate when he buys poison and murders Paris. If Romeo had not felt “that he could not control his life,” he would have had more willpower to not kill Paris and move on with his life after the apparent death of Juliet. E.…
