In “And of Clay Are We Created” by Isabel Allende Carle is changed by his act of love towards the little girl. Carle was not one to put down the camera but when it came to the little girl he stayed with her until the time came for her to leave. In the story it states “ On the evening news broadcast, he was still in the same position; and I, glued to the screen like a fortune teller to her crystal ball, could tell that something fundamental had changed in him. I knew somehow that during the night his defense had crumbled and he had given into grief; finally he was vulnerable”(286-291). Later in the story it mentions how he has changed as a result of the girls’ death. It states “Your camera lies forgotten in the closet;you do not write or sing; you sit long hours before the window, staring at the mountains. Beside you, i wait for you to complete the voyage into yourself, for the old wounds to heal”(322-324). The love he felt for the little girl cause him to take the voyage back to his old wounds, changing him. In conclusion love brings out the best and the worst in us. We as human think irrationally and commit rash actions that put other people and ourselves in danger. “The Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet”, “ Once Upon a Time”, and “And of Clay Are We Created” are all examples of poor decisions made by people acting out of love and how it affects the people around them. Love brings out passion and the pain of old wounds. Relationships can grow and prosper on this emotion or can dwindle and die with this
