Romeo And Juliet And Mercutio Relationship

Mercutio's connection with Romeo is that of Romeo's best friend, but yonder that, Mercutio also serves as Romeo's dramatic fall. Mercutio is the exact reverse of Romeo, and his vulgar and humorous nature contrasts against Romeo's serious and zealous nature. We see Mercutio's entertaining nature opposing against Romeo's when Mercutio makes lewd, sexual jokes, making fun of Romeo's broken heart and his tendency to fall zealously in love. We also see Romeo and Mercutio's relationship in this act when they interchange puns. When Mercutio calls Romeo's romantic engagements feminine by telling him to curtsy as a lady does, Romeo makes a joke out of the term pump to signify to both feminine shoes and a sexual implication with the line, …show more content…
Mercutio is an unstructured, eager and energetic character. Mercutio wants to cheer up his friend Rome when he is depressed. Mercutio says, “Nay gentle Romeo, we must have you dance.”(I.IV.13) Mercutio is determined to motivate both Benvolio and Romeo to sneak into the Capulet’s ball. After Romeo says he is too “heavy” hearted to dance, Mercutio is filled with vigor and tries to discharge Romeo’s love tribulations, more indication of Mercutio being full of existence. His character is considered to be the “jester” of the play. This is evident in all of the scenes he is in. Mercutio tells Romeo in Act I Scene IV line 27 to not be frightened to take charge, saying, "If love be rough with you, then be rough with love." This illustrates how Mercutio merely cannot comprehend Romeo's love, and that he sees his love as simply a bewilderment of emotions. Mercutio is very independent and he does not understand how someone could desire or need anyone or anything else in his life to fulfill it. Mercutio is not concerned in being dependent on anyone. Mercutio and Romeo are best friends even though they are the exact opposite of each other. Mercutio’s view in life and love contradict Romeo’s point of view of love and life. Mercutio sees love as sexualize and Romeo sees love as romantic. The relationship they have is bringing each other up. In reality they both bring each other

    Mercutio And Juliet Blame

Mercutio is an interesting character. But, a major reason why Mercutio takes part of the blame for the tragedy is his tendency to take risks, or more specifically, the fact that Mercutio decided to partake in a feast held by the Montagues greatest enemy. Although many could argue that this was Benvolio’s idea, it must not be forgotten that Benvolio is the only character in the book that can reason maturely, therefore Benvolio would have eventually changed his mind once he realizes the consequences or risks. But, then there is Mercutio, he openly goes to disregard Romeo’s…

Romeo and Mercutio are is my favorite foil in Romeo and Juliet. Throughout the play while Romeo is sappy and feeble, Mercutio is making jokes and ridiculous speeches(Act 1 S 4 line: 53 Queen Mab speech and Act 1 S4 line 25-29 “Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, Too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like a thorn. If love be rough with you, be rough with love; Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down.”) This example demonstrates that Mercutio is a rambling joker that can’t take stuff like “true love” seriously.…

    Mercutio Foils

Mercutio is known for being the jokester of the play. He doesn’t take love too seriously, in fact, much of his humor regarding love is based in sexual innuendos. " Prick love for pricking, and you beat love down" (1.4) Mercutio openly criticizes the idea of love, often skeptically. Since the entire play is based upon the experience of young love, this kind of character can seem refreshing to the audience as opposed to the more serious and heartfelt moments of the play. Romeo, on the contrary, is very earnest toward love, even if it gets him into a bit of trouble.…

Mercutio was the Prince’s kinsman, but more importantly Romeo’s best friend and confidant. Mercutio demonstrated loyalty towards his best friend, Romeo. He demonstrates courage and loyalty, accepting the challenge from Tybalt in order to defend his friend’s name. This ends very badly for Mercutio because of the fact that Tybalt managed to stab Mercutio with his sword. In regards to Mercutio’s death, his loyalty ended with two tragic deaths, his own life and Tybalt.…

Shakespeare uses Mercutio’s blunt nature to place emphasis on Romeo’s role of a blind lover. Romeo is fanciful and fashionable as a young lover with idealistic concepts of love as he is only able to express his love for Rosaline through figurative language; describing his state as “nor mad, but bound more than a mad man is: shut up in prison, kept without any food, whipped and tormented…”. He denies on numerous accounts that love has made him delusional, but on the contrary, it’s the “religion” of his eye. The passionate response he gives when rejecting Benvolio’s advice to replace his love for Rosaline with that of another, highlights his immaturity and inexperience as a lover. However, it is not until Romeo lays eyes on Juliet that he becomes aware of how artificial his love for Rosaline was as he questions, “Did my heart love till now?…

Romeo allows Mercutio to take his place in a duel against Tybalt. Mercutio dies as an effect, and Romeo makes a rash decision to go for Tybalt and seek revenge. Romeo does not think twice before he grabs his sword and heads for his enemy saying, “[Tybalt] Alive in triumph, and Mercutio slain? Away to heaven respective lenity, and fire-eyed fury be my conduct now! Now, Tybalt, take the ‘villain’ back again that thou gavest me; for Mercutio’s soul is but a little way above our heads, staying for thine to keep him company.…

This notion not only receives a helping nudge from Luhrmann’s Mercutio being presented in drag, but also from Mercutio’s incredibly volatile reaction being told he “consortest with Romeo”. This phrase can be interpreted very plainly as him being associated with Romeo, but his reaction assumes that of a defense to confrontation rather than a statement of fact. As we see people and their actions today, Luhrmann’s Mercutio could have taken the statement as an insult to his masculinity, or to his relationship with Romeo. He too…

Romeo; “This day’s black fate on moe days doth depend; This but begins the woe, others must end.” (Tybalt is killed in Act 3, Scene 1.) Romeo should not have been holding back Mercutio for it was the wrong place at the wrong time. Romeo and Juliet were moving into things way too fast. They should have took things slower and maybe tried to talk to their families about trying to be together and maybe try and resolve the family situation.…

One rash decision is for Mercutio, one of his dearest friends. Mercutio has just been killed by Tybalt in a duel in the streets of Verona. Romeo angrily says to Tybalt, “for Mercutio's soul Is but a little way above our heads, staying for thine to keep him company. / Either thou or I, or both must go with him” (3.1.131-134). Romeo, now wanting to fight Tybalt, shows a change of character, for thus far in the play he has had no intent of fighting anyone.…

In Conclusion, I think that Romeo is a young, inexperienced and impatient but loyal and brave boy. I think that his naivety plays a huge rule in this because love was taken as an extravagant feeling to have when it was not truly happy as the lovers can experience heartbreak and many other obstacles. It seems as if Romeo only more cautious and deliberate, his devastating ending could have been prevented (even though we have not finished the book yet). Amongst friends especially Mercutio, Romeo shows signs of his social and quick witted persona, even with his fond of verbal jousting that is mainly about sex. Lastly, Romeo is like every other male in the world who only unveils their true self to the people who they trust or who understand them.…

Mercutio knows if Tybalt duels with Romeo, Romeo will most likely lose. So Mercutio protects him by insulting Tybalt by saying “O calm, dishonourable, vile submission” then goes on to say, with a now drawn sword “Tybalt you rat catcher, will you walk” which is a question of a duel. Mercutio doing this is a great act of loyalty toward Romeo. Mercutio’s death by Tybalt adds to his heroic services to Romeo. Romeo shows his act of loyalty back to Mercutio by getting revenge on his soul, he does this by beating Tybalt and overall killing him.…
