The story of Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story. The original play, written by William Shakespeare is used in different storylines today. It is also portrayed in movies and books, but given a little differently in each. The play is has been modernized, used in the 1996 edition. A variety writers have a different way of telling the story, but all mostly works have the same story outline. The two movies from 1968 and 1996 each have a different way of performing the play. Each movie does however, follow the basis of the original play of Romeo and Juliet. Each work has its own style, but are still similar. The theme is something that stays the same in the two movies and the book. The theme of Romeo and Juliet is that if you love something chase after is and fight for it. Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet have to fight for their love. If they would have told their parents of their love it would not have been accepted. This is what eventually gets them killed in the end. This ending happens in every version, but each is a little different. In the 1996 version of the movie Juliet wakes up just before Romeo takes the poison, but there is still no time to save him. There are also things that the movies take out from the original play. For example when Romeo goes into the tomb Paris is not there, and Romeo does not kill him in either movie. In the 1996 showing of the movie, the Friar never came to try to stop Juliet from killing herself. The author may have taken these events out because he may have found them unimportant. Events stay the same in all of the works as well. Tybalt is killed in both films and the book. Without this Romeo would not have been banished and this would not be a problem for the two lovers seeing each other. Romeo also does not ever receive the letter from the Friar, although he always comes close to it. The setting and characterization is also different among the works. In the 1996 movie, Balfazar attends the wedding of Romeo and Juliet, this does not happen any other time. The tombs were also set up different in the two movies. In the 1968 movie the tomb is dark and gross looking. In the 1996 movie the tomb is brightly lit and colorful. Overall, the two films and the play are similar in all
