During the republican era of Rome, the people were granted representation in government. The government was separated into three sectors, elected magistrates, senate, and popular assemblies. The elected magistrates are civil officers with varying degrees of power, the powers starting with dictators on the top, below the dictator follows, censor, consul, curule, aedile, and finally praetors. The senate was made up of elite and veteran politicians appointed by the consuls and censors, and they were tasked with serving as advisors to the magistrates. The popular assemblies were made up of common citizens, and they operated according to direct democracy, thus all ballots were casted by common citizens of Rome. The slaves were also used for public works such as construction of buildings. The Romans were heavily influenced by their polytheistic religion, and they believed that every human occurrence was a sign from the gods pf how they're feeling about what they're doing. The Romans built many temples and used them for their religious rituals and sacrifices. The Roman military was superior to many other civilizations at the time, and their resilience in battle was a large part. The Romans refused to accept defeat, if a group of soldiers were wiped out in battle, Rome would not back down and would send more troops into battle. Prisoners of war, slaves, and criminals trained for battle, were part of Rome's biggest source of entertainment, the Gladiatorial Games. The Roman Republic was extremely rigid, but over time many social barriers began to fade, and the social structure was based heavily on heredity, property, wealth, citizenship, and freedom.
