Method To collect articles. Psych-info was searched using the terms autism, romantic relationship, and sexuality. Furthermore, the references that appeared in the papers that were identified within the search were crosschecked to see if they fit with criteria and were used as well.
Results
Romantic Relationships Most of the papers that looked at adults with ASD seeking and maintaining a romantic relationship were adults with high-functioning autism. Even though individuals with ASD may have difficulties forming and maintaining romantic relationships does not mean they do not have the motivation to try and pursue them. Other means of seeking a romantic relationship may be taken by individuals with ASD. Individuals with ASD may be drawn to the advantages that online dating provides because it is easier for them to interact with due to their social impairments. …show more content…
The sample consisted of 32 individuals that were at least 19 years of age and had to have an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis. The researchers developed their own survey called the Online Dating Survey, which was a self-report questionnaire. 46% of the participants that indicated that they utilized online dating services, they found that it was easier to use than regular means of finding a partner, such as traditional face-to-face dating (Roth & Gills 2015). 44% of the participants indicated that through online dating that a long-term relationship was from online dating (Roth & Gills 2015).
