Roman Military Changes

Rome began in 750 BCE. When Rome started, it was a sleepy little town, which soon evolved into the largest empire in the world. Their military was the best, conquering everything in it's path. Their engineers were ahead of their time, inventing concrete and sewer systems. However, Rome fell in a quick downward spiral, due mostly to their own accord. Rome fell because their military was weakened, there were drastic and multiple changes in leadership, and they were hit with a major natural disaster and invaded. One reason for the Fall of Rome, is that the military weakened. Due to interest, “Parade ground drills were abandoned, the customary armor began to seem heavy since the soldiers rarely wore it…” This was caused by laziness and lead to the soldiers being out of practice. Due to an inability to enforce laws, drafts began to be cut and people were able to evade them. Because people stopped abiding to the drafts, there was a smaller military population as people died. The longest reign of a ruler or rulers, was when Valerian and Gallienus reign, who reigned for seven years. The rest of the reigns are all less than 7 years, which shows just how quickly things changed in Rome, and how confusing this was for the Romans.
