The head of all of the gods is Zeus, better known to the Romans as Jupiter. Jupiter is the ruler of the sky and thunder, as well as the god of Mount Olympus. Some of Jupiter’s symbols are the oak tree, the eagle, the bull, and the thunderbolt. To the Romans Poseidon is known as Neptune. Neptune is the brother of Jupiter and he is the god of the sea. He was also known as the god of horses. The Roman version of Aphrodite is Venus. Venus is the goddess of all things beautiful, as well as fertility. Venus has several additional traits opposed to Aphrodite. She is considered the goddess of fertility, prostitution, and victory.
Some of the lesser known Roman deities are Janus, Maia, and Fortuna. Janus is the god of transitions, beginnings, endings, and time. Most of the time Janus is portrayed as having two faces; one face looks into the past, and the other looks into the future. Maia is the goddess of growth. Maia is also the mother of popular god, Hermes. Fortuna is the goddess of luck. Many Ancient Roman mothers tried to do crazy things to appease this mysterious goddess.
