Gladiators where entertainment for the Roman Empire. Gladiators lasted about one thousand years. Gladiators were mainly slaves, but freemen could join. The free men that joined were no longer free and were now slaves and had owners. Before becoming a gladiator you had to go to gladiator school. After you completed gladiator school you had to take an oath.
When in a gladiator fight the crowd could bet on who’s going to win the fight. The crowd could favor this gladiator for the other and place a bet. The longer the gladiators fought each other in the “ring” the more they got. The reason for this is because if the crowd bought seats with money and if the fight was only like 1 minute the crowd would riot and ask for their money back. When a gladiator loses the winning gladiator will stand tall while the loser will be on the ground. The loser will put his arm out and ask for mercy. Now the crowd decides his destiny. Then when he finally dies he is carried through the Porta Libitinaria. This is the Goddess of Burials. While he is being buried the slaves clean the arena from limbs, blood, e.t.c..

So because there were many types of gladiators there has to be many types of swords, armours, e.t.c.. Types of gladiator swords were the Pomeianus, Sica, Spatha, Gladius, Gladius Graeus, Acinaces, and Pugio. Types of shields were Parmula and the Pugnum. There were also darts and bows.
