Way back in 105 BCE something got started involving people fighting in an arena until death, those people were called Roman Gladiators. The Roman Gladiators were fiery, highly trained warriors. The fighters weren't always Roman gladiators! The first ever fight was in 264 BCE to commemorate the death of someone's father. In some cases of a fighter in the arena it would not always be a Roman Gladiator. It would also be prisoners of war, it could be free men that volunteered, bankrupt aristocrats. The Romans started the games because they were influenced by their predecessors in Italy (Cartwrighte 1). It started in 105 BCE and ended in 404 CE(Cartwright 1).Why did it come to an end in 404 CE? A monk from Asia came into the arena during 2 Gladiators fighting and stopped them after the monk stopped them the crowd stoned him to death(threw stones at him until he died)(Cartwright 6). For people who were not condemned or a prisoner of war(free men) they would have to sign a contract saying that they are okay with what they are going to be doing and learning while in the school.
