Critics believe that short stories help struggling readers to become more invested in reading. This theory has many supportive opinions. From experience, people who have no interest in reading have said that their disinterest comes from lengthy stories and no time to read the long stories, also readers have said that the many characters lead to confusion when reading. Short Stories help readers who have difficulties reading or those who have no interest in reading by providing a short storyline with minimal characters and confusion.
Struggling readers can struggle for many reason including that one can become bored with lengthy stories and novels. Short stories exist for the purpose of allowing one to read a good and entertaining story in a small amount of time. Some short stories like “Roman Fever” have lengthy pages; however, none of them compare to the length of a novel. “Roman Fever” has

These different backgrounds can lead to a lot of confusion for people who do not have the mind capacity or interest to know the characters which will help them to understand certain parts of the story. Short stories have one to two characters without long backgrounds that need to be known in order to understand the story. For example “The White Umbrella” has two important main characters to know and a few others that add to the storyline but have no real importance. Similar to “The White Umbrella,” “Two Kinds” also has 2 characters: June and Suyan. The story revolves around these two main characters. Without knowing anything about the “The Joy Luck Club” the background to “Two Kinds” would exist as unknown to the reader. More advanced readers can read and have an interest in “The Joy Luck Club”, but the short stories that have been pulled from the book take the place of the longer book while still allowing the reader to enjoy some of the story
