The Byzantine Empire referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire, was the continuation of the Roman Empire in the East during the late antiquity and the middle ages. It survived the fragmentation and fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD and continued to exist for an additional thousand years until it fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1953.
In most of its existence the empire was powerful in economic, cultural and military force in Europe. Both Byzantine Empire and Eastern Roman Empire are historiographical terms and its citizens refer to their empire Roman Empire and themselves as Romans.

The west was under pressure because it was developed and because they lacked a currency. The west was also down in terms of economic development. All these challenges weakened the empire and brought about its fall. Later Attila fell while the eastern empire enjoyed peace and prosperity.

The truth about the empire is or entirely known since there were no writings during this time. The empire is however believed to have been the best in history, when it was under one leader. In conclusion, Byzantine Empire was successful but it collapsed into many divisions. The divisions engaged in constant war. Peace never prevailed for long, and the empires blamed one another for that. To date, a little is known about their history. Byzantine is known for its peace, harmony, prosperity and tranquility.
