There are many successful civilizations that thrived for many years, but what did they need to succeed? What obstacles did they need to face in order to achieve a prospering civilization?One characteristic needed for a successful civilization is a strong ruler who could keep the country together even during a war or conflict. A civilization needs strong and intelligent soldiers that are quick learners and never cease to disappoint.Rules set in place for the people and new inventions are used to improve the country. Many of the male citizens of Athens had a duty to defend the city-state in war and be an active citizen in the politics of it all. (Doc.1) All the people of a country/nation/state would need to work together and be involved in the workings in order for the success to be widespread. In order to have citizens that were involved and were eager to help the empire at any time, they needed to be treated kindly. Tu Shih, governor of Nanyang, saw the hard-workings of the people and wishing to save their labor, invented an engine for the casting of iron agricultural implements.(Doc. 9) Such determined citizens could eventually become worthy and noble soldiers. “We therefore command the various district officials to search for men of brilliant and exceptional talents, to be our generals, our ministers, and our envoy to distant states.” (Doc.8) Emperor’s Wudi’s empire had talented and worthy soldiers, resulting in his tomb being filled with 8,000 life sized terracotta soldiers representing the protection the country and the Emperor himself gained. This represents how important it is for a civilization to have soldiers and citizens that not only protect the country but improve it as
