I will include the importance of each in the life of the Romans and the results of their use. The arch was very important for the Romans. They didn’t invent it, it was used many years before by the Egyptians, and others (The Influence, n.d.), but the
Romans greatly improved it. They did this by using their natural talent of finding a solution to difficult problems, by putting a large amount of worker’s efforts into the project. In the old days, arches were only used for small structures, but the Romans found a way to use them for many very large structures (Kamm, n.d.).
They did, however, invent an early version of concrete, which allowed them to reach great architectural achievements. One …show more content…
Special ways of mixing cement, or concrete, allowed the Romans to build very big structures that had a very long life spans. Mixing in different shaped stones had different effects, some of which were used to produce mortar, to use in their war efforts
(Kamm, n.d.).
The Romans were able to develop special techniques for using concrete and arches, and other materials, to build circular temples for the first time. The most famous of these is the Pantheon, which is one of a number of their buildings that are still around for people to enjoy today (Kamm, n.d.).
They used these techniques and materials in all areas that they controlled, and there is still evidence of it today, in places like Northern Africa (Kamm, n.d.).
In order to maintain their vast empire, they had to construct walls around towns, as well as roads and bridges, aqueducts and fortresses, for which large amounts of concrete was used, along with other materials, to make them big and strong. Some of the wonderful arches that still remain today supported the bridges and parts of the aqueducts (Kamm, n.d.). These arches reduced stress on
