Two civilizations that share many similarities and differences are the Romans and Greeks. The Greeks influenced many aspects of the Roman civilization. The Greeks first came to be around 1600 B.C.E. Rome was supposedly founded in 753 B.C.E. The ancient Greek civilization rose to power before Rome was established, and fell at the hands of Rome. Both were powerful in their time, and both left legacies that can still be found today. The Greeks were located in a mountainous peninsula, a 45,000-square mile territory. Because of their location and the surrounding mountains, they were left isolated. They occupied islands and eventually became seafarers. During the sixth and seventh centuries B.C.E. the Greek polis (or Greek city-states) were led by tyrants who came to power in ways that were not constitutional. Even though this did not last, it did end the rule of oligarchies with narrow aristocrats. The city of Athens started as a monarchy and fell under the rule of aristocrats in the seventh century. After an assembly of five hundred male citizens was created, Athens democracy was established. The city of Sparta became an oligarchy. The Romans transitioned to a republic government from a monarchy. Their republic had chief executive officers that were called the consuls and praetors. The consuls led Rome into battle while the praetors were in charge of the civil law. Rome had a senate, which consisted of 300 men who served for life. There was a centuriated assembly that favored the wealthy and there was a council of the plebeians which favored and protected the lower class. The Romans were good diplomats. The Romans also had laws that influenced common life today, such as the idea that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Even a judge is used to decide guilt. They had a code of laws called the Twelve Tables and a Law of Nations which were used to help decide right from
