In the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie, a African-American eleven year old, experiences racism for the first time, and does not realize that she will have to live with whites always acting as the best. For example, Cassie, a black girl, and Lillian Jean Simms, a white girl, bump into each other, on the sidewalk, Cassie apologizes, but gets a response back from Lillian Jean that she was not expecting; “That ain't enough. Get down in the Road.” (Taylor 113). This quote shows injustice to blacks because if a black person ever says that to a white person, they get beaten up badly, or, worse, they may get killed.
