Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry Essay

The novel Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry depicts racism during the Civil Rights era in America. In the story, Mr.Granger views African Americans as being below white people. According to the Declaration of Independence, The Gettysburg Address, and Martin Luther King Jr.`s I Have a Dream speech discrimination is not justified.

First, The Declaration of Independence applies to all people and not just Mr.Granger.
For example,”We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal” (Dec. of Ind.). This shows Mr.Granger`s rights are supposed to be the rights the Logans have. By denying the rights of the Logans, Mr.Granger is being hypocritical. In addition, The Declaration of Independence protects people's` rights to freedom, “That among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” (Dec. of Ind.). King also knew that not all people were racist because in his speech he also said, “ The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of white brothers as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny” (King).
