There are many important side characters in the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred R.Taylor, the one about the Logan family and racism after the Civil War. Mama, Papa, Big Ma, Mr. Morrison, Mr. Avery. But one character stands out: Stacey. Stacey is one of the most important of the minor people in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. For one, he’s very mature, and understands racism. He tries to make the best decisions for his brothers and sisters, and he knows what will get them in serious trouble. He’s also Cassie’s older brother, so Cassie trusts him. One reason Stacey important is so he can try to get his siblings out of danger when they make naive decisions. Barnett because he took the white people’s orders even though T.J ordered first, an obvious example of racism. But Mr. Barnett flairs up, and insists that Cassie get her “little black self” out of the store. Cassie is about to retort back, but Stacey stops her just in time. “‘Shut up, Cassie!’ His dark eyes flashed malevolently as he pushed me in front of him through the crowd.” This shows that Stacey knows that if Cassie goes any further, she’ll get hurt. So Stacey tries to get Cassie out of there is fast as he can, because he wants to protect Cassie. If he hadn’t interfered, Cassie would have kept talking, ultimately causing the racist white men to harm her. Even though Cassie doesn’t know why, Stacey just did her a huge favor. But that’s not all. Stacey also has good judgement, and is very mature. When he gets in a fight with T.J. in the Wallace store, he listens to Mr. Morrison’s advice and tells Mama about the incident. Though Mama is really angry, Stacey made a good decision to go tell Mama. He would have the guilt off his shoulders, and Mama would be able to advise him on why not to go to the Wallace
