‘Roll of thunder hear my cry, over the water bye and bye, ole man comin’ down the line, whip in hand to beat me down, But I ain’t gonna let him, Turn me ‘round. Tolerance will play a major role in the book ROLL OF THUNDER HEAR MY CRY. As the character Cassie realising the truth of the real world, with the whites thinking that they’re better than them. Taylor used description on page 43 to describe how the bus comes for them every day. Here s a quote. ‘But it was, we also had to worry about the Jefferson Davis school bus zooming from behind and splashing us with murky waters of the road.’ This shows description because Mildred D. Taylor explains how the bus zooms down the road everyday just to splash the logans. She also explains how the explains how the splash of water the buss hits them with is this dark murky waters off of the dirt road hitting them and getting there clean clothes all dirty. This sets up the problem with stacey and the logans wanting revenge on the bus driver and the bus itself for getting there new clothes dirty and pushing them off the road into a muddy ditch each time. This shows the theme of tolerance because Cassie and the logans are accepting it and not fighting back. The author Mildred D. Taylor also uses description in another place in the book, such as on page 43. This is the quote from that page. ‘Knowing that the bus driver liked to entertain his passengers by sending us slipping along the road to the almost inaccessible forest banks washed to a smooth baldness by the constant rains.’ This has plenty of examples of how the author uses description such as when the author writes about how the bus driver drives the logans off the road while the smoothing constant rain pours over there head. This also sets up the problem with stacey and the logans furious that this keeps on happening …show more content…
This following quote is from page 247. ‘When T.J objected and said that he was going to tell everybody it was R.W and Melvin who had hurt the Barnetts unless they took him home, the two of them lit into him, beating him with savage blows until he could not stand, then flung him into the back of the truck and went down the street to the pool hall. This reveals actions about the characters because R.W and Melvin have shown that there not really friends with T.J, but instead use him to get away with a robbery and murder. The only reason why they brought T.J and get him the pearl handled pistol was to keep him quiet. This raises the stakes because now T.J has to worry for white people to find out about this incident, the possibly killing him. This connects to the theme of tolerance because R.W and Melvin have no tolerance with dealing a boy like T.J, who is willing to tell on them for robbing the Barnetts. Not only was the author revealing actions there but in another part of the book such as on page 251. Here is a quote from the page 251 ‘Kaleb Wallace and his brother Thurston pounded the front door with their rifle butts. Y’all come on outta there! We want that thieving, murdering nigger of y’alls.’ This reveals Kalleb Wallace's actions because when stacey and T.J got into a fight he didn't care, but when a black and white people get into a fight he truly cares and is going to get T.J for it. There are also cases of other African American women assaulted and/or raped by white men as well as cases of African American men falsely accused of rape, neither of which containing court rulings that are backed up with substantial evidence. McGuire’s argument seems to be that there are many unfair and unjustified rulings made by the courts in cases of sexual violence. The case of Recy Taylor is discussed a great amount throughout the book, while others such as the case of the Scottsboro Nine are seemingly tied into this case, making it…

In the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie, a African-American eleven year old, experiences racism for the first time, and does not realize that she will have to live with whites always acting as the best. For example, Cassie, a black girl, and Lillian Jean Simms, a white girl, bump into each other, on the sidewalk, Cassie apologizes, but gets a response back from Lillian Jean that she was not expecting; “That ain't enough. Get down in the Road.” (Taylor 113). This quote shows injustice to blacks because if a black person ever says that to a white person, they get beaten up badly, or, worse, they may get killed.…
