Introduction
Conflict is a literacy technique used throughout most novels. During the process of the conflict character development is shown. This technique makes the character face a challenge that will change them along the way. This is shown in the novel "Roll of thunder hear my cry" written by Mildred D Taylor. 3 different types of conflict, person vs society, person vs person and person vs self are shown in the book.Cassie our protagonist faces these conflicts. Each time a situation is sent her way we find out a bit more about her. Person Vs Society

This is shown when the protagonist, "Cassie" meaning the good or innocent person in the scenario and the antagonist "Miz Crocker" this meaning the evil or villain in the scenario. They have an argument over a book that her brother was given in class that had a word that offended who she was and what she believed in. Little man started to angry about but asked politely for a new book. When Miz Crocker refuses Cassie steps in and stands up for her brother. Miz Crocker just thought Little man and Cassie were being ungrateful and spoilt. This conflict shows character development in Cassie as she stands up for her brother little man. "Miz Crocker dont please."" i know why he done it." As Cassie stands up for her brother she shows loyalty to her family and she shows that she will stand up for what she believes is right. the conflict developed cassies character giving us more to take in about her and who she is. In the book she has to fight with herself which then changes her character. She is changing her beliefs by hiding a secret from her mother. Just earlier on in the day the kids had dug holes in the road causing the Jefferson Davis school bus to crash. When news started to spread more and more people started to know. When Cassies mother found out she had to go against her on will not to tell her what had happened. As the children were sworn to secrecy and could not tell. "its funny, i didnt even notice the beginning of it this morning, did you children"No'm we chorused" You didnt fall in did you?" We jumped onto the bank when we thought the bus would be coming along. " "Well good for you." This is showing that the Cassie had lost her loyalty by lying to their mum. which is another development made in her character. Making her character extremely complex. Fighting with herself not to tell changed her completely from being loyal and always telling the truth to not telling the truth and lying to her
