Adhemar’s view of women would have also been the norm in medieval society and wouldn’t have seemed wrong. In medieval society, men saw women as property and they also treated them that way. A woman who didn’t have a man with her wouldn’t be able to make it anywhere in the world. The woman was only seen as extensions to a man and not their own self. That is why Kate being an independent blacksmith was a far stretch for the times. She would not have been able to make her own business or run it for any amount of time. She would have had to work for a man and would have never made it past there. Skill, resolve, or hard work wouldn’t have mattered because she wouldn’t have any customers. If she did, though Kate would have needed to drop her prices really low because people wouldn’t pay anywhere near top dollar for her products. That alone would have sent her out of business.
