Roles Of Political Parties In The United States

Political parties are organizations that run candidates for political office and coordinate the actions of officials elected under the party banner. There are many different types of political parties around the world. In Western European countries, the major political parties have millions of members and the party leaders are in control of what their elected officials do. In many new democracies, candidates run as representatives of a party but the party leaders don’t really have control over what the candidates say during the campaign or how they act while in office. In America, there are two main parties which are the Republican and the Democratic party that seem to be somewhere in the middle of these two. Americans pick a party and develop a deep connection to them, and the organizations’ actions affect both election returns and policy outcomes. American political parties are decentralized. They each have a loose network of organizations, groups, and individuals who share a party label but don’t have to work together. It involves the structure of national, state, and local parties which includes party leaders and their workers. The core body in each party organization is the national committee which consists of representatives from state party organizations which is usually a man and a woman from each state. They run the party’s day-to-day operations, they enlist candidates and supporters, raise money for campaigns later on, and they work to build a consensus on major problems. There are also constituency groups in each party. They work to attract the support of demographic groups like African Americans, Hispanics, those with strong religious beliefs, senior citizens, and women. All parties also have “brand names” which gives voters information about their party. This helps the decide who to vote
