Roles can be determined by what's your position in your family, whether or not if you are on a team, what you do as an employee, etc. Roles are a very important and recurring factor or theme in Pleasantville. Reciprocal roles are roles that cannot be achieved without someone else in a joint or related role. This can be found through marital status in which are marital status cannot be achieved without two reciprocating roles. As in Mr. Parker could not be a husband without Mrs. Parker being his wife. One needs the other role in order for their own role to survive. When someone has a role they are often thought to known what they are doing and the nature of how they should be doing their role. This is called role expectations. Role expectations often cover role like jobs which expect you to know what you are doing and the behavior that you should maintain while doing it. In the film Pleasantville, Bill Johnson is the owner of the local soda shop. His role expectations is that he knows how to open the restaurant, cook burgers, make milkshakes, and then close the restaurant.
