Is Sita an obedient, devoted and a submissive wife, who follows her husband wherever he goes and supports him in any situation? Does she suffer silently without protesting? Or is it an independent, bold, courageous, powerful and fearless Sita who fights with her husband to accompany him to the forest, faces the powerful and the aggressive Ravan, raises her kids as a single mother and then refuses to go back to her husband after he dishonors her as an individual? Today the character ‘Sita’ is only presented as a loyal, faithful and devoted wife in front of people. The existence of her fearless, liberal and independent nature is easily ignored. We may find similar characteristics and situations in today’s world but the ways of dealing with them in both the times have no connections at all. In Indian Mythology, epics like Ramayan and Mahabharat have earned the greatness for a number of reasons as they teach us a lot of valuable lessons, but, does that mean they are able to provide solutions for all our problems in this modern world? Well, I don’t think so.
It is really strange that whenever the example of Sita is given by people, most of the time they try to convey the idea to tell the women that they should behave in a very polite, obedient and manured manner. They should follow whatever their husbands’ instructions are without protesting, as Sita did in ‘Ramcharitmanas’ by Tulsidas. It’s always with an intention to show women their limits and boundries and to make them remember that they should stay within the so called ‘Lakshman Rekha’.
If we consider the character of Sita according to Valmiki's projection, she is a very strong character compared to Tulsidas's. It is a very sad fact that people ignore this strong part of her characteristics and only project her as an obedient and faithful wife, which is very limited representation of her total personality and
