Kohmann Dressage: A Discourse Community When a community comes together with a common interest and goal they are considered a discourse community. Our whole life we have been part of some discourse community and have not even realized it. Discourse communities are all around us in different forms; from businesses to schools to clubs, we see a discourse community everyday of our life. Even though discourse communities are everywhere we go, these communities have certain boundaries they follow, not even realizing, to be considered a good discourse community. As Swales stated, “theses public goals may be formally inscribed in documents, or they be more tacit” (Swales 220). I was able to observe that most of the goals at Kohmann Dressage were tacit. One of the main goals of the community is safety of the horses and their riders and handlers. This goal is unspoken and rarely told, but while observing the barn I was able to see how everyone interacted with each other and the horses; I saw how everything done was in the benefit of the horse and riders safety. While speaking further to Kevin my observations was correct and he was able to confirm to me that one of the main goals of the community is always safety of the horse and rider. Kevin also has a goal for his community of always seeing improvement and growth in his riders. Even though I spend six days a week riding and training at Kohmann Dressage I never realized all the work and details this discourse community has. I am always on the surface of this discourse community, since I just come to the barn ride and then leave; it was nice to get into the mechanics of everything and see how things are done. Even though I pretty much spend all my time at the barn I never realized that Swales six characteristics come into play everyday; I thought they were going to be hard to find, but luckily they were not. It was nice to be able to get the perspective of the community through Kevin’s eyes and see it in a whole different
