On November 17th, my friend and I observed a musical at Carroll University called Numbers Nerds presented by the Carroll players. The musical is about a Waukesha high school competitive math team who received second place in their state competition due to their team captain getting stage freight. However, one of their competitors cheated on a problem and the Waukesha team was able to progress to nationals in New York. Although the play consists of a lot of disagreements between the main characters, they do grow as individuals and in the end, become friends once again.…

Individual Diversity Involvement For my Individual Diversity Involvement assignment, I decided to see Arsenic and Old Lace at the Troy Civic Theater. The theater, run by the public, is a great example of a community coming together for entertainment and socialization. The performers ranged from a young age of nineteen to, what I venture to guess, around seventy-five. The show was the first play of their 50th season, and was chosen along with the other plays and musicals that will be shown during the season by a board of directors at the beginning of each season. The people involved with performances including the actors, directors, managers, and set members are not reimbursed for their time or performances.…

Journal Article Analysis: Communications 320 Summary Kramer’s 2006 study “Sharing Leadership in a Community Theater Group: Filling the Leadership Role” explores the communication methods utilized by individuals in a setting in where shared leadership would seem to be vital for group success. As background for his study, Kramer notes that throughout history, leadership studies have focused almost solely on individual leaders within groups or organizations, hardly ever exploring organizational structures in which leadership is being shared among constituents. Additionally, he points out that the few studies that do broach the topic of shared leadership, still don’t delve into the communication events behind this sharing of power.…

Pippin, known as one of the most prosperous Broadway shows of all time, has an underlying theme missed by many. On the surface, the plot follows a young actor playing the role of Pippin who ends up re-writing the narrative to fit his journey; however, the deeper meaning lies with the Leading Player. The Leading Player’s implied goal is to make sure each production of Pippin runs smoothly. She acts as a puppeteer and makes sure everything is up to her standards. When this performance starts to fall apart, she pulls the strings to keep herself in power over Pippin.…

Chapter 4 deals a lot with role-playing and identity as a human being. Throughout the chapter, Tolle presents us with numerous examples and scenarios in how we role-play and how our identity seems to shift when we are in different locations or talking to different people. I feel that there are also several grim points that Tolle brings up in the chapter, regarding the nonexistence of a true relationship and how “falling in love” usually has nothing to do with true love but instead our ego wanting its need and desire for the other person. That concept really intrigues me, because it goes against what I have thought about falling in love. Tolle mentions that when two people commit into a relationship they tend to role-play the person that their counterpart wants them to be—resulting in a relationship that is not genuine and based on role-play.…

Role Play Reflection Before doing the video, I became somewhat anxious at the thought of being on camera; knowing that I was going to be evaluated did not help my anxiety at all. After all, I am an introvert; even at that I love listening to people talk about their life’s experiences, and love to help them resolve their issues whenever possible. This is one reason I am looking forward to learning more about the social work field. I have always been careful at how much advice I offer a person; even more so now, after this class, because I recognize that if a worker is not prepared to help in the proper way she can do more harm than good to all the parties involved in the process. I am also aware that I am a social work student, and that my…

The Lubbock Moonlight Musicals in partnership with Texas Tech’s School of Music definitely did not disappoint with their amazing performance of Phantom of the Opera. This is one of the most well know and classical musicals but doesn’t fit into any specific category. It is not exactly classic musical theatre due to the music being for classically trained singers, but it is not exactly an opera either because it has dialogue while an opera is traditionally completely sung. This makes for a difficult mixture of is not for the faint of heart and is quite the undertaking for any group of artist because it takes many incredible singers that are also talented actors. Tech’s music department did a wonderful job delivering on both of these stipulations and made The Phantom of the Opera an experience that I will not forget anytime soon.…
