Role Of Violence In Persepolis

We live in an extremely violent world. One way to look at all of this violence is to blame human nature. People are naturally violent, and that’s why we live in such a violent world. The reasoning is instead of complaining we should be thankful that we have police, army, and prisons since they work to stop all of the violence.
Violence being immoral

Violence stems from the fear of losing control along with a sense of uncertainty about the future and maintaining power. In today’s society, acts of police brutality are far higher with regard to members of minority races. Therefore a world based on equality represents the death of old societies and prevents people from benefiting at the expense of the exploited. In Leo Tolstoy’s response to pacifism and nonviolence, he states “Excuses can be made for every use of violence, and no infallible standard has ever been discovered by which to measure the worth of these excuse” (What would you do? 49). Tolstoy believes that in keeping with Christian teachings, there is no reason to resort to violence as a means to achieve an end.…

Two viewpoints, or extremes, come to mind when discussing violence. One can either view violence as something that is necessary, or one can detest violence with a burning passion. People who insist that violence is necessary in order to move forward, view it as a sort of tool to help push the natural order of things. For those who see violence as a cowardly tactic to control people, violence is a useless display of power and dominance. Yet violence has also been a way to defend oneself from people who pose a threat.…

In these two panels from Marjane Satrapi’s book Persepolis, Satrapi uses the contrast between the chaos and horror of the explosions in one, and the fun and happiness of the party in the other to highlight just how abruptly tragedy can strike. In the frame of the explosions, Satrapi uses sharp angles and dark shading to show the effects of the mines that people have stepped on, and the people flying through the air with keys around their neck are those who are unfortunate enough to suffer the fate of the war. Despite the fact that hardly any detail can be seen within the image, the keys hanging around the necks of the bodies in the air can still crisply be seen. Conversely, in the second and only other panel on the page, Satrapi depicts a party…

Pinker uses a chart that estimates the deaths of people from the twentieth century to the twenty-first century (Pinker 701). The early 1900s included countless deaths from wars, slavery, and other violent conflicts.…

It almost seems as if human nature itself promotes violence among individuals; however, it is not the only pushing force that causes a person to lift a knife against their fellow man, and certainly not the most powerful. Grief, anger, and a corrupted mind all serve to instigate violent acts in both literature as well as the real world. Although a person can pick up a fictitious book about murder and laugh it off as nothing more than a story, it is important to realize that everything that was ever written about social interactions of any kind was inspired by a real life event, and, just as in imaginary worlds where a character ends up causing their own downfall or that of others, there are real individuals who take actions that eventually…
