In today 's modern times gender roles are constructed depending on the type of environment in which individuals develop in. Meaning that individuals can be influenced by numerous factors. The meaning of a gender role in today 's society for many people means the behaviors that are normally considered to belong to a certain gender, for example the most basic one in which men are the ones to be seen as more masculine than women. At first, Workman had introduced the idea that hormones were the reason why males and females had their specific gender roles. After giving a brief summary of what a gender role was, Workman stated "..gender stereotypes seem to be pretty universal, with males perceived as the competitive, status-seeking, risk-takers who are sexually indiscriminate, and females being seen as more passive, choosy and coy". By saying that gender stereotypes are universal, Workman has placed male and female gender roles to be primarily what she said to be in most cultures and communities, being that males are seen to be more direct rather than women. The meaning of this is that Graham is trying to prove some sort influence that happens to the children that are raised by same sex relationships. Graham has said "Kids of gay and lesbian parents are less likely to adopt traditional gender roles and more apt to pick same-sex partners when they grow up...", the importance of this is that same sex couples have a massive impact on their children because they are influenced not to take part in normal gender roles and that they are more likely to choose a partner of the same sex. The gender norm in today 's society has this idea about how females should be less masculine than males and at times are not considered masculine at all.
