Romeo and Juliet Paper In Romeo and Juliet suicide can be seen throughout the play. Today suicide happens frequently, it is seen as a tragedy, and ways of committing suicide differ from those in Shakespeare’s era. Suicide, a sensitive subject to talk about, means intentionally causing one’s own death. In Romeo and Juliet, both Romeo and Juliet commit suicide. In the last ten years the thought and act of committing suicide has increased; especially in teens. This is due to popularity and usage of social media and the internet. Every year about 30,000 people in the United States commit suicide (“Suicide”). While compared to the world’s population this number is miniscule, it is still a lot of people. Also suicide is a serious issue and is something that either takes a lot or no thought at all. People believe taking their own life is the only solution to the endeavor they are currently facing. Ultimately, many people in the world are turning to the worst case scenario. Aside from frequency, people today feel very strongly toward suicide. In Shakespeare’s era the motto was “death before dishonor (“Internet”).” Men and women considered the idea of death before ever bringing dishonor to their families because family was very important to people. Before this scene Shakespeare shows the audience Romeo visiting an apothecary to buy a certain drug. He knew this was illegal, but he was able to convince the seller to sell it to him. Another method used back then was poison (poison happens to be what Romeo bought to use for his death). Today infamous methods include overdose on medicine, drinking bleach and many other ways. These ways differ from each other in that current methods are more gruesome. Also today these methods are more complex when compared to simply stabbing yourself with a
