Reverend Hale is a scholar, and a preacher from Beverly. He is devoted to only taking an accused witch to court if there is proper evidence. Hale came to Salem to investigate the rumors of witchcraft intellectually. He is confused when he realized the girls are lying. Confusion turns to guilt when he realizes he may have caused innocent people to die. Once Reverend Hale realizes the girls are lying he second guesses to save the people still being accused of witchcraft. Reverend Hale is not to blame, because he believed what he did was the right thing. This lead to the verdict the of guilty verdict. His role changed from prosecutor to trying to save their lives. People were never fully sure what the truth was.
