First of all, Friar Lawrence is completely senseless in his planning to help Romeo and Juliet stay together. For example, he gives the sleeping potion to Juliet to put her …show more content…
For instance, Friar Lawrence understands the consequence of extreme love, but he is unwilling to actually help Romeo and Juliet through their desperation for each other. During the wedding, Friar Lawrence describes the outcome of extreme love to both Romeo and Juliet, he says, “These violent delights have violent ends/ And in their triumph die like fire and powder/ which as they kiss consume. Although Friar Lawrence informs the lovers of the consequences of too much love, and even tells them to love moderately, he is still not doing enough to prevent a possible tragedy. He seems to foreshadow a tragic ending to the lovers, which clearly specifies he knows what can happen in the future. Another showcase of Friar Lawrence’s irresponsibility is deciding not to specifically mention that the letter meant for Romeo is very important to Friar John. Friar John fails to give the letter to Romeo; he meets with Friar Lawrence and informs him about the problem, Friar Lawrence replies, “Unhappy fortune! By my brotherhood, / The letter was not nice but full of charge, / of dear import, and the neglecting it/ May do much danger” (5.3.17-20). Undeniably, Friar Lawrence recognizes the possible dangers that can occur now. However, this displays that Friar Lawrence’s irresponsibility plays a part in the outcome. He decides not to acknowledge Friar John the importance of the letter, which causes Friar John to make a lesser attempt to give the letter to Romeo, when he is already facing a tough situation. Finally, Friar Lawrence is irresponsible because he runs away when Juliet is left at the tomb
