Role Of Punishment In Antigone

Decent Essays
I believe that if a person got punished for doing what they think is right, they should accept the consequence. If a person knows that they will be punished but they heavily agree with what is right I believe that they should do it. Although they should determine whether if what is right is exceptional enough to stand up for. Then also evaluate whether the punishment is too great for them to handle. This goes hand in hand with believing in your conscience. Your conscience will help determine the good or bad coming from doing what you think is right. Getting punished for doing what you think is right can be seen in Antigone when Antigone gives her brother a proper burial even though she knew she would get punished.

Antigone’s audacity causes her downfall as she insists to risk burying her brother and defy the state’s laws, proving that audacity results with unfavorable actions that one wouldn’t sensibly desire to do. Creon tries to advise Antigone and help her escape the punishment she faces when she disobeys the state’s law, however, she disrespectfully opposes this and says, “Why then delay [my execution]? There is nothing you can say that I would wish to hear…” (139). Unwilling to cooperate with the king’s help, Antigone expresses her disinterest by not considering the offer. The Circumstances When People Follow or Not Follow Their Conscience Different circumstances require different measures. That is, there are sometimes when people follow their conscience, and at other times, they don’t follow their conscience. In my opinion, people follow their conscience when they feel that the actions they take are righteous or when they have peace and feel confident about these actions that they take. On the contrary, I believe that most people don’t follow their conscience when they are pressured to do something that they rather not do. In addition, I also believe that different people also follow different actions, based on many of their different attributes, such as their race, the environment they live in, and their place of birth.…

Most of the time, people enjoy confiscating credit from others and giving it to themselves. If a group is working on a school project together and one person does all the work, then he or she will want all the credit for the grade when the others try to say they provided assisstance. This was the case with Antigone and Ismene. When Antigone was punished by Creon for burying her brother, Ismene tried to take some of the blame, but Antigone told her “[coldly]” (Sophocles 701), “You would not help me, and I will not have you help me” (Sophocles 701). Like on a school project, Ismene did not want to help Antigone, so she did not receive any credit.…

Despite its ancient origins, Sophocles’ play Antigone provides a case study through which to examine issues of politics, power, sovereignty, and justice. The final of Sophocles’ trilogy “Three Theban Plays,” the first record of Antigone is around 442 BCE, during the height of Athenian democracy. The play centers around Antigone’s decision to disobey her future father-in-law and king, Creon, in order to give her brother Polyneices, who is branded a traitor and is forbade a proper burial. One of Oedipus and Jocasta’s living two children, Antigone flaunts Creon’s laws and gives her brother a proper burial. Santirocco, author of “Justice in Sophocles’ Antigone,” states, “ [Antigone and Creon are a lot alike] both are isolated, both are stubborn, both respond to others, including those who love them, in the same imperious way, and both doom themself and others by their actions. The greatest similarity, though, lies in their pursuit of justice” (186). Antigone knows from the beginning what her morals are, which are steering her actions. She felt she was on the side of justice for what she did, and leaving her brother out to rot in her eyes was unjust. Antigone knew the punishment that lied ahead, but because her love and relationship with her brother was strong she was unconcerned of the consequence.…

The Divine Sacrifice Although it is believed that ancient Greeks did not practice human sacrifice, the concept itself occupied a large space of Greek drama, which raises questions about its meaning(s), function(s), and how it has contributed to the human-deity relationship in Greek Drama. Human sacrifice, as a thematic frame, is common within the works of the three Greek tragedians, who employ it as a mean to create a dilemma in their plays, add a layer of meaningful depth to the human death, and/or to stage a tragedy that invokes pity and provokes conclusions. As Wilkins noted, human sacrifice, in the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, is, more often than not, related to the gods within Greek mythology—it is a call that comes…
