Values: The Role of Patronage in Renaissance Art Patronage, generally speaking is the money and support provided to an organization, business, and so on. When referring to the impact of patronage on art during the Renaissance, we typically refer to this as the support provided by surrounding popes, kings, and the wealthy which would overall be provided to artist such as musicians, painters, and sculptors. Basically speaking, patrons operated as sponsors in order to endorse their political positions, social positions, and prestige. Specifically, Florence in the 15th century was an extremely suitable place for the talented artist of this time. Florence, Italy had greatly been shaped by the practice of patronage during this time of the High Renaissance, therefore at the dawn of the 16th century many well known artists even to this day were in great demand.
These key artist, known as the masters of the High Renaissance in Italy, included Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael Sanzio, and Michelangelo Buonarroti, as well as Donato Bramante, and Italian architect. Donato is very well known for making the most significant architectural contributions to this period, introducing Renaissance architecture to Milan and Rome.
