The Lord of The Tell Tale Heart What would it be to look inside the mind of a psychopath? “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe tells the story of a man who becomes obsessed with his friends eye. His obsession leads him down a path of stalking and murder. In The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien there is a character that aids the heroes Frodo and Sam along a journey to destroy the ring. His name is Golem. He is not helping them out of the goodness of his heart, but rather his wicked obsession with the ring. These two stories show how obsession can drive someone crazy and lead to their demise by showing how obsessed the characters become, what their obsessions make them feel/do, and how guilt will eat away at them. They act with out thinking about the consequences; this could be dangerous. The main character in the “Tell Tale Heart” starts to deviate from his main schedule. “The ringing-within my ears”(Poe 306) He starts to watch the old man as he sleeps. His obsession with the old man starts to increase in creepiness and violence as the 7 nights he watches progress. It’s at those nights watching that he decides that he is going to kill the old man. The last night that of the story the old man wakes up. He realizes that some thing is in the room with him but doesn’t know what or who is in the room with him. The main character unveils a light and it rested upon his eye. Seeing the eye sets him off. He kills the old man and plans the cover up by mutilating the body and hiding it in the floorboards. Golems obsession with the ring caused him to leave home and travel with the hobbits that had the ring in the possession. He lost the ring awhile back to a hobbit named Bilbo. The killing of the old man was the start of the downward spiral for the main character. “The ringing in- within my ears” (Poe 306) When the cops show up he dose not feel any guilt yet for what he has done. While sitting with the cops he slowly starts to hear a ringing/ beating sound. It is guilt. He doesn’t recognize what it is in the story. He thinks it is the cops playing tricks on him. Eventually he can’t take it anymore. He confesses and gives up the placement of the body of the old man. Golem creates a different way to deal with his guilt. He ends up creating two personalities within himself. One is trying to be a good guy and the other is trying to make him do bad things to his friends and feel no guilt. “Dialect between him self”(Lord of the Rings) He is trying not to be talked into hurting his friends. In the end when Frodo goes to throw the ring into the volcano golem ends up biting off Frodo’s finger and falling into the fiery volcano leading to his demise. Guilt is one of the hardest things to overcome after you hurt something. These story’s show that the main characters did not deal with the guilt they created for themselves and ultimately led to there
