Role Of Integrity In Macbeth

Originally, Macbeth is described as a “brave” and “valiant” warrior by the captain, who reports back to King Duncan that “[Macbeth] unseam’d [Macdonald] him from the nave to the chops. And fixed his head upon our battlements”. This introductory account exemplifies Macbeth’s initial personal integrity as a loyal subject to King Duncan as well, it characterizes a fearless and passionate warrior. In this stage of the play, Macbeth’s fate and free will is to be and stay a loyal subject of the king. Macbeth’s character is then further concreted in the audiences’ eyes as he is again commended by the captain as a “lion”, while the enemy is likened to “a hare”. It can be inferred that Macbeth, in this situation, has great integrity in the eyes of both the captain and King Duncan as he is fighting off the treacherous Macdonald and succeeding in that. The impacts of these thoughts would demise his integrity as he has become less trustworthy in the eyes of Banquo. Through this scene, his fate, according to the witches, is to become the King of Scotland and overthrow the King Duncan. Upon speaking with Lady Macbeth, glimpses of Macbeth’s great integrity is seen again when he avoids his wife’s persuasion to kill Duncan as they “will speak further”. This exemplifies Macbeth’s great integrity still exists but he is open to the idea of becoming king. Meanwhile his fate, predetermined by the witches, has caused his integrity to be questioned. At this point, it can be inferred that Macbeth will overthrow the king through plausible means.
