Well, this is how the community was for Montag in the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Bradbury wanted to created the opposite of a good society within this book, a dystopian society. The protagonist, Montag, was a firefighter, but only because his dad and grandfathers were. Firefighters had to burn books because they were illegal and provided people with knowledge. Everyone had to be of the same intelligence and couldn’t read about new ideas. Montag and his friends rise up against protagonist, the society. Today so many people are reaching for equality and to be alike, but would it really be that great? In a society where there is no individuality, no one’s life would be special or valued, which was also included in Bradbury’s book. If lives aren’t valued, suicide and murder will circle around your world like crazy. If no one is valued, self-esteem will sink drastically, causing the suicides, like MIldred’s suicide in the book. Individuality is a giant part of today’s society. People revolve around being different, that is is good to be “different” so, if this is a good trait of today’s world. Let’s not let sameness ruin our community like it did for Montag’s community in Fahrenheit 451. The quote, “Ten minutes after death a man’s a speck of black dust. Let’s not quibble over individuals with memoriams. Forget them.” is put into this essay because it is showing how much life is not valued. Individuality is not worth the potential risks involved in Fahrenheit 451, “The Pedestrian”, and “Harrison Bergeron.” One example of this is when Harrison is killed in “Harrison Bergeron” for being too intelligent than the other citizens. When the emperor was able to break off his controlling device, the narrator says, “She fired twice, and the Emperor and the Empress were dead before they hit the floor” (Vonnegut 4). The narrator shows that Harrison’s (the Emperor) life was harshly taken away, just because he was different from everybody else. Another example that being individual isn’t worth the risks is when Mead is arrested in “The Pedestrian” just for being outside and taking a late-night stroll, even though everyone is in their houses…

Individuality created conflict in the culture of the novel Fahrenheit 451, and the government trying it’s best to demolish any individual who tried to go against the law. In the novel, individuality is not accepted because it gave people the ability to question certain actions that were not right. Everyone lived off conformity, people were not supposed to question what they thought about things, like Clarisse explains to Montag that people did not quite seem to talk about anything interesting. With individuality society is able to be different, to think out side of the box, to create new ideas, and become a diverse community, but in the novel it wasn’t viewed in a right way because it would rot society’s minds.
