Introduction
According to the Cambridge dictionary sport can be defined as “a game, competition, or activity needing physical effort and skill that is played or done according to rules, for enjoyment and/or as a job.”[1] Throughout history sport has been used as a binding tool that allows nations and its people to rally up along sports teams in support. This is an occasion where many people are bound together under a unifying cause. This statement is directly opposed by SV Tshwete who states that sport played an important role in the unifying of the South African nation after the reign of Apartheid ended. These “Peace Building interventions” include “Security, Socio-economic foundations, Political Frame work, Reconciliation and Justice as well as Building relationships, connecting individuals to communities and using sport as a platform of communication”[3] It is clear to see that the Un evaluation of sport is in direct contrast to that of Denver Hendricks view of sport as the UN states that “use of high-profile athletes and sport events are used to highlight structural causes of poverty and social exclusion and to advocate for solutions.”[4] Studies further taken by the UN state that “69% of developing countries and 85% of developed countries either use or plan to use sport in national strategies for conflict resolution or peace-building.”[5] By these strategies being implemented nations will begin to be unified and thus build up the patriotism and economic aspects of countries.
